The Weekly Reel

It was a long week with the wife and son gone, but I got a little more movie viewing in than I have been able to in the last few weeks.  I was struck with a realization this last week while watching movies by myself at home that I no longer want that anymore.  I would rather have my wife with me to make jokes or generally be by my side.  It will be the only way I can watch some movies, but regardless, I would rather have her there.  Next week I will have a requested review for the “Watcha Think Buddy” articles and maybe a Men in Black 3 review.  Here we go:

The Crow

It had been years since I had seen this film and it was disappointing that it doesn’t seem to hold up, but that does not mean the movie is no good.  Just knowing what it could have been if made during a time of better effects was continually on my mind.  Shots throughout the film look great and Brandon Lee did a pretty decent job.  I wonder if he would have been any good if he had not been killed on set or if he would have been a straight to DVD guy.  The films action scenes are its best parts while the horrible dialogue by the villains doesn’t help the film at all.  No need for a remake here…but that could be said about 99% of planned remakes.  2 stars out of 4

Grindhouse

This was a great idea that just didn’t seem to work for audiences.  Would have been cool to see what another one might have looked like, but it will never be.  Planet Terror may be the better film in this double feature, but Death Proof has some incredible moments, mostly involving Kurt Russell.  It still bugs me to the point of anger the completely racist portrayal of a young black woman who is a pivotal character in the film…how did Hollywood, the Mecca of political correctness not notice this?  The fake previews may be the best part of the movie as a whole.  Give it a shot if you like Tarantino or these types of films, other than that, very acquired taste here.  3 starts out of 4

From Dusk Till Dawn

I actually hated this film the first time I saw it.  My cousin and I had drove up to Los Angeles to visit my sister and she said we should go to a certain theater for this film on opening night.  Her reasoning was that Robert Rodriguez could show up.  We went, we saw, we mocked.  It wasn’t until a few years later, after I started watching more grindhouse films that I watched it again and enjoyed it for what it was.  Another movie not for everyone because of violence.  2 stars out of 4
